Bifrost Thrust Rudder

Up to 25% improved propulsion efficiency.

Greener and efficient propulsion

The Bifrost thrust rudder system improves the water flow behind the propeller to increase thrust.
Make operations more sustainable by reducing fuel consumption and the environmental footprint.

More thrust from your propeller

Vessels with nozzles aren’t built for speed, but for power. But a lot of energy from the propeller remains in the rotating water flow, energy that doesn’t create thrust.

The Bifrost Thrust Rudder converts the rotating propeller wake into a straighter flow that provides higher thrust.

Increase bollard pull or reduce fuel use. Better performance, lower fuel costs and fewer emissions; without changing the whole propulsion system.

Thrust Rudder Impact

Increase propulsion efficiency to increase bollard pull, or reduce fuel consumption:

8%

Transit

Up to 8% efficiency increase during transit, such as 8-10 kn.

16%

Work speed

Up to 16% improvement at work speeds, 4-5 kn, such trawling, pushing, loaded, etc.

25%

Towing

Up to 25% improvement towing in short and moderate towline separation.

Meeting Global Standards

As maritime regulations and society demands become more stringent, our thrust rudder provides a solution to comply by improving your operational efficiency and margins.

  • IMO 2030 & 2050 Targets
  • Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)
  • EU Emissions Trading System

On a 2000 hp vessel:

230 tons

72.000 liters

A trawler that is 40% of the time in transit between port and fishing grounds, and 60% at work speed would see an average of 12% reduction of the annual fuel consumption.

Technical Background

The Bifrost Tug Thrust Rudder increases propeller thrust, that you can use to increase bollard pull, or reduce fuel consumption:

CFD confirmed

The effect of our thrust rudder has been validated with several CFD simulations, based on real propeller and nozzle data.
Results consistently show improved thrust, drag and flow behavior.

Validated by

Thrust Rudder Prototype

Tugboat Daafjord, operated by Sea Tug AS in the Ålesund area. Note both horizontal and vertical control surfaces.

The small 8m tugboat has a 500hp engine and 8,5t bollard pull. But because of our solution, it can tow bigger loads.

More competitive and greener service compared to bigger tugboats that are more expensive to run.

Improvement under towing

The Bifrost Tug thrust rudder provides an additional benefit to vessels that tow with short and moderate towline separation. It redirects the waterflow from the propeller efficiently while towing, which increases bollard pull capacity.

Active Thrust System
With the active system, the waterflow goes underneath the barge, reducing its drag. The wake turbulences and waves in the barge are reduced, while the actual speed is 1 kn higher.
More thrust is available to increase bollard pull or reduce fuel consumption.
Conventional Rudder
Without the thrust rudder system the propeller wake displays a more turbulent flow and more waves against the barge, showing how energy is wasted. The tug requires more engine power and fuel to perform the same task.
Reduced fuel consumption, increased bullard pull, greener and more competitive operations.
