The thrust flap improves the water flow after the propeller. The propeller wake has a less turbulent flow and less waves around the barge. The actual speed is 1 kn higher and the tug increases bullard pull. The boat uses less fuel to move forward.
Without a thrust flap the propeller wake displays a more turbulent flow, generating more waves against the barge. The tug requires more engine power and fuel to perform the same task.
